MANILA, Philippines - Mel Paulino Abundo, husband of former PSC commisisoner Tisha Abundo and brother of International Chess Federation (FIDE) general secretary Casto “Toti” Abundo, passed away Saturday night after a bout with diabetes. He was 63.
Abundo was survived by wife Tisha, children Michael Patrick, Mark Paul, Melvin Peter and Flo Abundo, Michelle Pauline, brothers Toti, Ronnie and Glenn and sisters Lynn and Wilma.
The remains lie in state at the Loyola Memorial Park Marikina Chapel. Interment is at the Philam Homes Chapel in Quezon City on Nov. 30.
The late Abundo, a practicing lawyer until his retirement five years ago, is a former elementary and high school student at the Ateneo.
He attended college and pursued a law course at the University of the East, where he met his wife and then varsity volleyball player Tisha, who eventually became national volleyball standout, commissioner of the PSC and currently athletic director of the Philippine School of Business Administration.
He was the UE Dawn Newspaper’s first editor-in-chief chosen by examination.

His brother Toti has been with FIDE since the early 80s when the late Florencio Campomanes became president. He holds the permanent position of FIDE general secretary.
