FEU spikers down UE in UAAP volley

- Olmin Leyba -

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University finally broke an opening-game jinx in UAAP women’s volleyball that hounded them for two consecutive seasons as it beat University of the East, 25-19, 25-14, 25-23, at the resumption of Season 74 action yesterday at The Arena in San Juan.

Sophomore Mayjorie Rojas led the Lady Tamaraws’ assault with 12 hits, a strong performance Maica Morada complimented with her own 11 points, and three blocks.

In men’s action, Sam Paquiz registered 26 hits and three blocks and Mico Lucindo and Luis Miguel Apostol each had 11 points as University of the Philippines stung defending four-time champion University of Santo Tomas, 25-22, 18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 18-16.

Ateneo beat UE, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21, in the other men’s game with Ricci Gonzales scoring 12 points and Duane Teves making 11 for the Blue Eagles.

The Lady Tamaraws, owners of 29 UAAP women’s crowns, played a determined lot in their season-opener, an indication that they are serious at making the Final Four after missing out the last two seasons.

Jimberly Dawn Dizon and Teresa Caballero each had 17 points for the Lady Warriors, who are now coached by Boy Dalistan.

Wenneth Eulalio dished out consecutive hits to give FEU a 23-20 lead in the third set. But UE threatened at 23-24 on an outside hit by Roxas.
