S'woods rules PAL Ladies Interclub

MANILA, Philippines - Manila Southwoods-Masters, with Regine de Guzman firing 56 PAL points, closed out with a 156 and capped its romp in the revival of the Philippine Airlines Ladies Interclub with a whopping 54-point victory over Del Monte at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club in Davao yesterday.

De Guzman gunned down four birdies, including back-to-back from No. 10, against two bogeys for a two-under 70 in stroke play worth 56 points as he led Southwoods-Masters’ final round charge for a four-day total of 624.

Sunshine Baraquiel and Beachie Abiera backed her up with 51 and 49 points, respectively, to underscore the team’s tournament long domination of the event.

De Guzman went on to bag the individual crown in Flight A, edging Negros’ Anya Tanpinco, 113-112.

“Everyone’s excited with the win. We’re proud to be the champs in the PAL Ladies Interclub after a 23-year absence,” said Abiera, captain of Southwoods-Masters.

Del Monte drew 55 points from Eva Miñoza while Pam Mariano had 47 and Apple Fudolin added a 45 in the four-to-play, three-to-count format event for 147 and a 570 total.

Rainstar Roque, Del Monte’s 12-year-old teen wonder, took the Flight B title with 89 points.

Alabang, the last winner of the championship division in 1988, topped the Founders Division, beating Negros with a 491 aggregate after a 128. 

Anna Mendoza shot a 47, Rita Horan made a 46 while Joan Morales scored a 37 as Alabang defeated Negros by 22 points.

Negros, which led in the first two rounds with a 132-136, finished with 96 and 105 for 469.

Riviera placed third with a 99-425 followed by Valley Golf-South (105-414), Cebu Country Club (103-391) and Mactan (93-371).

Southwoods made it a double celebration as its Legends team ruled the Sportswriters Division. Claudine Garcia and Nini Samaniego each carded a 44 while Heidi Schettkat added a 31 for 119 and 425.

Eagle Ridge came in second with a 395 after a 100 on the 38 of Linda Goble, 34 of Jessie Cho and 28 of Edith Williams. Bacolod finished third with 387 while Manila Golf pooled a 372 for fourth. The Kooka-Birdies from Australia ended with a 173.

Rancho Palos Verdes also ran away with the crown in the Friendship Division, scoring a 102 for a 403, beating Apo (92-355). Davao had an 83-333 for third followed by Victorias (101-325), Iloilo (73-308), Tagaytay Highlands (81-295), Japan (79-264), Malarayat (76-259) and Valley Golf North (77-230).
