NLEX opens defense, routs vs PC Gilmore

-

MANILA, Philippines - NLEX, drawing 16 points from RR Garcia, blasted PC Gilmore, 85-61, yesterday to kick off its drive for a second straight crown in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Adamson U gym.

The Road Warriors, winners of the inaugural Foundation Cup, made short work of their rivals, dominating practically every department with their size, agility and aggressiveness.

In the other game, Lester Alvarez hit a triple with 52 seconds remaining as Freego Jeans held off a late charge by Boracay Rum to fashion out a 58-48 decision.

Alvarez finished with 18 and his trey against Maclean Sabelina gave a Freego Jeans a 55-48, cushion and a share of the lead with Blackwater, Cebuana Lhuillier and Big Chill with 2-0 slates.

“We struggled down the stretch. But it’s still a good win for us,” said Freego Jeans coach Leo Austria.

Boracay Rum dropped to 1-2.

NLEX pulled away right in the opening period as Garcia, last year’s UAAP MVP, and Woody Co picked up their offensive rhythm early.

“A nice win for us but we still lack chemistry,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez.

“(PC Gilmore) is a strong team. I’m sure they’ll be competitive as soon as they get their Fil-Ams in the line-up,” said Fernandez.

It was the second straight blowout loss for the Wizards, still hopeful to suit up Fil-Ams Kelly Nabong, AJ Mandani and Rome dela Rosa.

The trio watched helplessly from the sidelines as they await their certificates of recognition from the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation to be able to play in the fledgling league.

Calvin Abueva added 14 points and Garbo Lanete shot 12 points for NLEX, which built a 27-13 lead after one quarter and coasted the rest of the way.
