Zambo reigns in B Pinoy

MANILA, Philippines - Misamis Oriental ruled the boxing event but host Zamboanga City bagged 23 more gold medals in swimming to complete its dominance in the Mindanao qualifying leg of Batang Pinoy 2011 in Zamboanga City.

Four out of the seven MisOr boxers who reached the finals won gold medals Sunday night with Rapael Jalnaiz leading the charge at the Paseo del Mar.

Jalnaiz, son of two-time Olympian Roberto Jalnaiz, scored an 11-2 victory over Samuel Salve of Gingoog City in the minimum weight (38kg) category while brother Roberto Miguel Jalnaiz beat John Patrick Dinolan of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), 14-5, in the paperweight (44kg) class.

Raynald Lao barely beat Michael Codilla of Panabo City in a bout that needed a countback (49-43) when the scorecards ended in a 13-13 deadlock also in the minimumweight (38kg) class.

Danniel Maamo of MisOr also won over Mark Andy Austria of Panabo City, 29-22, in the light pinweight (36kg).

Panabo City, meanwhile, won three gold medals in boxing, including and the Best Boxer award.

Wen Joshua Vanguardia of Panabo City stunned Junil Pamisa of MisOr, 4-1, in the antweight (36kg) category, while teammate Michael John Bahena outpointed Jevee Panaungan of Davao del Sur, 7-4, in the pinweight (48kg) class.

Jerson Fabricante disposed of Elmer Pamisa in the minimumweight (38kg) finale and was later named the Best Boxer of the tournament.

Zamboanga City, meanwhile, racked up 23 golds, 27 silvers and 13 bronze medals in swimming to finish with 85 golds, 105 silvers and 61 bronze medals in the games organized by the Philippine Sports Commission in partnership with Smart, Maynilad and Summit Natural Drinking Water.

Davao City finished second with a 36-31-47 tally followed by Dipolog City with a 31-37-25 record, General Santos City (28-10-9 ) and Davao del Norte (28-8-7).

The gold medal winners in the five qualifying legs of the Batang Pinoy 2011, supported by Milo, Jollibee, The British Council, Standard Insurance and Negros Navigation-Super Ferry, will advance to the national championship slated on Dec. 10-13 in Naga City, Camarines Sur.
