Arpilleda dominates Jakarta 9-Ball
MANILA, Philippines - Victor Arpilleda edged Irsal Nasution of Indonesia, 11-10, in the championship to capture the 2011 Jogjakarta 9-Ball Open crown in Indonesia last Sunday.
Arpilleda, the 1997 Jakarta SEA Games 9-Ball gold medalist, trounced Philippine Open titlist Ricky Yang of Indonesia, 9-4, in the semis then outlasted Nasution in the finals to pocket the top $7,000 purse.
The victory primed up Arpilleda for the upcoming BSCP National Championships, which gets under way on Oct. 3 at the Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City.
Also expected to join the title hunt is Dennis Orcollo, who beat Finland’s Mika Immonen, 10-8, in the finals of the Predator International 10-Ball Open at the Robinson’s Galleria in Ortigas last week.
According to BSCP chairman Yen Makabenta, the BSCP will use a three-game format for the tournament. In the battle for the men’s championship, the players will compete in three events – 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball.
The 2011 men’s national champion will be determined based on total points garnered by each player from all three tournaments. Points will be assigned to players based on their order of finish in each event. In the women’s championship, players will only compete in 10-ball event.
A total prize fund of P800,000 will be up for grabs in the three tournaments and the grand national championship.
Registration is ongoing. For details, call Sol Gueco at (0910)887-5216; or Edgar Acaba, BSCP secretary-general (0916)573-1458.
