Parola Maritime nips Secret Spices in overtime
MANILA, Philippines - Parola Maritime rode on the hot hands of Mike Cabangon to eke out a 93-91 overtime win over Secret Spices Foods and regain a share of the lead with idle Star Group of Publications in the MBL Corporate Cup basketball championship at the Aquinas gym in San Juan.
Cabangon scored eight of his 14 points in the extra period, including an uncontested putback that put Parola ahead for good, 92-89, after battling from an early five-point deficit in the overtime
The win enabled Parola of playing coach Biboy Simon and managers Simon and Bumchil Heo to join Star Group in the lead with 3-1 win-loss slates in the eight-team tournament supported by Ironcon Builders, Cebuana Lhuillier, PRC Couriers and WG Diner.
Secret Spices dropped to 0-3.
Secret Spices had a chance to steal the game after Dudoy Ignacio hit two free throws to make it 91-92 with 22 seconds left, and Pol Santiago of Parola split his own charities for 93-92 four seconds later.
But Doods Litonjua bungled a hurried three-point shot and Raymund Maconocido missed a desperation follow-up try as time expired.
Santiago finished with 20 points.
