DPS tankers third in Singapore swim meet
MANILA, Philippines - The Diliman Preparatory School, barely six months into its swimming program, finished third overall behind the 12-gold medal performance of its 15 swimmers in the seventh Singapore Island Country Club age group swimming championship which ended yesterday.
Mathew Tan, from the Bicol Ibalong Magayon Club, won two gold medals in the 13-14 category with clockings of 32 seconds in the 50m backstroke and 1:12:32 in the 100m backstroke.
The Philippine Swimming League had three most outstanding swimmers in Sam Doragos in the 7-8 category, Trisha Oliveros in the 11-12 and Jaja Cordero in the 15-17 age level. Doragos and Cordero are varsity swimmers of the DPS Swimming Center of former Sen. Nikki Coseteng.
“It was a fantastic performance for the swimmers,” said PSL president Susan Papa.
“I was amazed by their fighting spirit, although it was their first time in an international meet,” said Coseteng, referring to the Bicol swimmers.
In all the DPS-PSL combine won 12 gold, 15 silver and nine bronze medals.
Singapore won the overall championship on the combined performance of more than 50 swimmers while Thailand was second.
