Palmera-Camarin chess gets going

MANILA, Philippines - The first Palmera Springs 1-Camarin 2050-below Non-Master Chess Championship active chess tournament will be held today at the covered courts of Palmera Springs in Camarin, Caloocan City.

The event is sanctioned by the NCFP and sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence, Royal King Bren and Tony Fabico. Asia’s first grandmaster Eugene Torre and World Cup qualifier GM Marc Paragua will lead in the ceremonial moves in the simple opening rites.ceremony slated at 9 a.m. The tournament starts at 10 a.m.

Also invited as keynote speaker is NCFP chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay.

Participants are encouraged to register as early as 8 a.m. to avoid the rush. Registration fee is pegged at P250.00 for non-students, and P200 for students and kiddies.

The tournament is open to all students in the elementary, high school and college, members of other chess clubs and players rated 2050-below.

Prizes at stake are as follows: P5,000.00 for the champion, P3,000 for the runner-up and P1,500 for the third placer. Category winners in the kiddies, ladies, unrated and seniors division will receive P700 each.
