Fund lack imperils Manila softbelles stint
MANILA, Philippines - Members of Team Manila-Philippines yesterday appealed for financial assistance even as they hope to make it to the Little League World Series Softball Championship Big League Division slated Aug 2-10 in Michigan.
Lack of funds has put the team’s participation in the annual event in jeopardy although lead pitcher Maria Isabel Gabriela Trinidad believes they can contend for the crown against the top teams in the world.
Trinidad, a junior varsity player of De La Salle Zobel, has called on the government and private sectors to support the team.
“So far, only four of us have secured airline tickets while my other teammates are still waiting for sponsors. I hope we can make it on time. I’m proud of our team. We are all determined to give honor and glory for our country that’s why we are appealing for any support anyone can extend,” said Trinidad.
The Manila softbelles gained a berth in the World Series by topping the Big League Regional Championship in Bacolod City recently.
Joining Trinidad in the team are Veronica Belleza (pitcher), Annalie Benjamen (pitcher/2nd base), Gleryl Opjer (pitcher/outfield), Michelle Lentija (pitcher/2nd base), Chariz Palma (catcher), Cindy Carol Bamay (short stop), Gene Joy Parilla (outfielder), Rizza Bernardino (pitcher/first base), Francesca Altamonte, Chichiro Bamba, Laura Victorina Lehmann and Trinidad.
The team underwent rigid training through coaches Anna Marie Santiago, Carmelita Velasco, Shierlon Valenzuela and Randy Dizer.
“I hope our sacrifices and hardship in training and discipline motivated by our coaches will turn into gold if we can get there (Kalamazoo) and make our sport of softball proud for every Filipinos,” Triinidad said. “While every sector supports basketball, boxing and football, world campaigners softball/baseball and dragon boat also deserve the same lift they enjoyed at this juncture.”
