MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Shooting Association under its new president Mikee Romero is on shooting spree.
Romero, barely a month after assuming the PNSA presidency, yesterday bared the association’s calendar or activities for the remainder of the year.
There are 11 tournaments, both local and international, lined up from August to December, making them the busiest months for the PNSA and its shooters.
“We call this a shooting frenzy,” said Romero during the PSA Forum at Shakey’s along UN Ave.
“It’s the first time we’re hosting and competing in tournaments one after the other,” said Romero, who was into competitive shotgun before he got hooked with basketball as team owner.
Joining Romero in the forum were PNSA executive director Atty. Larry Paredes, shooting champion Gay Corral and executive assistant Eric Arejola.
Romero said getting busy with tournaments is the best way to revive the sport in the country, create more awareness and at the same time discover potential champions and future Olympians.
The “shooting frenzy” starts off with the Rifle and Sniper Championship to be in Taytay, Rizal in August.
On tap for September are the first Philippine Collegiate Shooting Championship, the Combat Action Shotgun Championship, to be supervised by multi-titled Tac Padilla, and the SEASA Rifle and Pistol International Championship in Laos.
The Philippine National Open is set in October along with the Asian Shooting Conference and the Asian Airgun Championships in Kuwait. In November, it’s time for the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia and the Asian Shotgun Championships in Malaysia.
And lastly, in December, the PNSA will host the Philippine International Shotgun Open and the Philippine National Shotgun Open.
“The Philippine International Shotgun Open from Dec. 6 to 14 will be the biggest so far under my watch. It will be the biggest event for the PNSA,” said Romero.
“We’re hoping that with these tournamanets we can jumpstart and drumbeat the sport of shooting in the country because 2012 will even be busier than this,” he added.
