MANILA, Philippines - La Salle-Zobel made it 2-0 in Season 74 juniors basketball action of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines as it trounced University of the East (UE), 92-59, at the Blue Eagle gym over the weekend.
The Junior Archers, who stunned reigning three-peat champion Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 78-75, in overtime last week, dominated the Recto-based cagers in the opening period and virtually settled the outcome with a 50-23 bulge at the turn.
John Boo came away with 15 points to lead the Junior Archers attack with Gabriel Reyes and Martin Betia adding 12 points apiece.
DLS-Zobel also finished with 27 assists against UE’s measly six as the Junior Archers built a 28-point lead after the third quarter before cruising to that 33-point rout.
No Junior Warriors managed to finish in double figures with Ricardo Mandilag and John Malones scoring eight points apiece.
Meanwhile, the Blue Eaglets bounced back with a 60-48 romp over the FEU side in the other game while Adamson U matched La Salle-Zobel’s solid start with a 75-65 overtime victory over University of Santo Tomas.
National University also dismatched University of the Philippines Integrated School, 85-49.
The Blue Eaglets, who were led by the 10 points of Mark Gamboa and the 13 rebounds of Tomas Ramos, outrebounded their opponents, 58 to 44, and had four more assists with 12.
In women’s caging, Inna Corcuera scored 11 points and pulled down 19 rebounds as De La Salle edged University of the East, 55-52, for its second straight win at the Blue Eagle gym last Sunday.
UST, drawing 17 points and seven rebounds from Juvelyn Andaya, downed Ateneo, 64-51, to tie La Salle in the lead.
The Lady Archers wore down the Lady Warriors to pound out the victory.
Hannah Vieterbo fired 13 points to power De La Salle, which trailed UE three-fourths of the way.
Dianne Ventura finished with 21 points and Cindy Resultay made 17 points and hauled down 18 rebounds for the Lady Warriors, who slid to 0-2.
Adamson, the two-time champion which lost UST last Wednesday, got back on track with a 70-58 victory over National U.
Anna Buendia hit 19 points and made 10 rebounds while Snow Penaranda scored 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.
Far Eastern U broke into the win column with a 58-34 win over UP, which dropped to 1-1.
Action resumes Sunday with De La Salle taking on Adamson at 9 a.m., UST battling FEU at 11 a.m., NU facing off UE at 1 p.m. and UP colliding with Ateneo at 3 p.m., also at the Blue Eagle gym.
