Jeson, Kiwi pal gain round of 16

- Olmin Leyba -

MANILA, Philippines - After taking an early exit in the singles, Jeson Patrombon poured it all as he and Kiwi partner Jaden Grinter dispatched Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium and Filip Peliwo of Canada, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), in the doubles of the AEGON Junior International-Roehampton 2011 in London.

The Patrombon-Grinter pair pounced on their solid serving and return game to overcome the challenge of Coppejans and Peliwo and forge a Round of 16 showdown with Sean Berman of the US and Jason Kubler of Australia.

Berman and Kubler advanced via a 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of British duo Jonathan Cornish and Evan Hoyt.

Patrombon’s coach, Manny Tecson, said the extra practice that his ward got prior to the match helped him get more rhythm on the grasscourt this time.

“He was moving well and his timing and rhythm is getting better. Unlike yesterday (singles) when he was shanking the balls a lot, miss-hitting it especially at his forehand side,” said Tecson, whose ward yielded a 5-7, 5-7 setback to Russian qualifier Evgeny Karlovskiy the previous day.

“But as the match got longer he was timing his forehand and the miss-hitting became minimal.”
