Over 260 see action in Asean senior golf tiff
MANILA, Philippines - Over 260 players, including 30 Filipinos, will make up this year’s six-nation roster of the ASEAN Senior Golf Amateur Championship slated July 4-6 at the Mimosa and Fontana golf courses in Clark, Pampanga.
This marks the sixth time the country is hosting the annual regional meet with the organizing Federation of Philippine Association of Senior Golf, Inc. (FPASGI) ensuring the successful staging of the 28th edition of the event.
The FPASGI is the official organization sanctioned by the Confederation of ASEAN Senior Golfers Association (CASGA).
The event’s chief backers are the Department of Tourism, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), San Miguel Corp., Business Mirror, Mareco Broadcasting Network, Inc. Eagle Broadcasting Corporation and News Central in Subic, Clark and Tarlac.
FPASGI president and organizing committee chairman Clyde Fernandez said the roster of players representing the six participating member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian National (ASEAN) had been completed as early as three weeks ago with the Philippines fielding in 30 players.
The ASEAN senior golf championship is held every year among the original members of the ASEAN – Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines – and participated in by the official senior golf federations in their individual countries. Currently holding the rotating CASGA chairmanship is Brunei, with the Philippines next on the line in 2012.
The Philippines first hosted the event in 1987 at Villamor Golf Club which drew 151 players.
After the main event, a one-day tournament will be held within Metro Manila.
