Wongs sizzle, top Bill Shaw Classic

MANILA, Philippines - Elphege Wong and Damas Wong combined for a 131 to capture the overall championship while Marvin Caparros and JB Garcia took the Group I plum in the 22nd Bill Shaw Classic at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club last week.

The Wongs turned in a 67 at the tough East layout then assembled a 64 at the West to best a huge field in the 36-hole member-guest team tournament that featured the best-ball format in the first day and aggregate in the second round.

Caparros and Garcia pooled a 132, including a 64 at the West, to hold off Tootsi De Jesus and Katya Dela Cruz for the Group I crown in the event held in honor of the club’s founder and presented by PLDT/Smart with Splash Corporation as title sponsor.

De Jesus and Dela Cruz nipped Wilbert Tan and King Stehmeier, who also had a 134, in the countback for runner-up honors in the tournament backed by premier sponsors Madrigal Bayot, San Miguel Corp., Pacific Links Golf Developers, Inc, Unilever Phils and Asia Brewery, Raymondo’s Trophies and major sponsors Duty Free Phils, 3D New Generation, Mileage Asia Corporation, Stradcom Corp., G&W Clubshares, Sharp Phils, China Airlines, Asia Therapeutics, Inc, Excellent Golfing Partners Corp, and Outback Steakhouse.

Lance Chan and Nicholas Dybuncio shot a 135 (70-65) then edged Mario Padilla and Steve Gerona (68-67) in the countback to cop the Group II crown with Isaac Go and Louis China finishing third with a 139 (71-68).

Neptali Gonzales II and Gene Sison ran away with the Group III title with a 135 (68-67) with Andrew Tan and Sidney Cheng (73-69) nipping Jose Emmanuel Angeles and Fritz Azanza (69-73) in the countback for runner-up honors in the event supported by hole-in-one sponsors Cats Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Union Motors, Toyota Balintawak, Auto Hub, Standard Insurance, Club Car, Kart Plaza, the Turf, Contract Designs and Dynamic Sports Corp.

Francisco Singian and Antonio Villanueva Jr. combined for a 159 (80-79) to bag the Group IV diadem over Ronnie Lim and Willy Tee Ten (83-78) and Edgardo Legarda and Miguel Legarda (84-77) in the event backed by EVAir, Toyota Forklift, GG & A Clubshares, Tsukiden Global Solutions, Rebisco, Zest-O Corp., Motolite, AlphaLand, Ayala Land, ArthaLand, Ortigas & Co, Resort World One IMBS and Rapidé Auto Services.

Viko Angala and Jack Roxas ruled the Sponsors division with a 142 (76-66) with Mitrie Espiritu and Ronaldo Bernardo (75-73) and Darren Gafford and Steve Wilson (78-72) finishing second and third, respectively.
