Cubs sweep Freego Cup elims
MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion San Beda outplayed Ateneo, 66-54, to clinch the No. 1 spot in Group A at the end of the classification phase of the fourth FCBL Freego Cup at the Buddhacare gym over the weekend.
Arve Tolentino fired 17 points to lead the Red Cubs, who swept all their six games in the annual high school cagefest backed by Talk ‘N Text. Tolentino was also named the Freego Player of the Game.
San Beda meets Xavier School in the knockout quarterfinal round, which starts today.
Xavier finished fourth in its group after beating Mapua, 89-79, in the final game of the elims of the tournament supported by Powerbest Mktg. Inc., Colt Commercial, Oceanic Container Lines Inc., Old Chinatown Kopitiam, Mandarin Sky Seafood Shabu-Shabu Restaurant, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Fresh Gear, Apple Tape and Happe Toothpaste.
Jeron Teng shot 44 points for Xavier to easily bag the Freego Player of the Game honors.
Despite the loss, the Red Robins still wound up No. 2 seed in Group B with 4-2 slate for a quarters clash with Adamson.
Hope Christian High School drubbed UST, 79-55, to gain the top seeding in Group B with a 5-1 mark. HCHS will take on fourth seed FEU in the quarters.
