Manila, Philippines - Garvo Lanete sank a go-ahead triple with 3.3 seconds left to lift San Beda College to a gut-wrenching 70-68 squeaker over De La Salle University in the 2011 FilOil Flying V Hanes Pre-Season Premier Cup at the Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Down by a point, 67-68, with under a second left, the Red Lions swung the ball around until they found Lanete lurking in the right elbow for the huge trey to give them the lead.
Off a timeout, La Salle went to point guard LA Revilla in the ensuing play for its last chance but he fumbled and eventually lost the ball as the Archers failed to even get a final attempt.
The victory strengthened San Beda’s chance to enter the quarterfinals with a 3-2 mark while La Salle dropped to 2-3. Should the Lions win their final two outings, they would book a seat in the quarters.
In the second game, Far Eastern University swept the eliminations after handily downing inconsistent Letran, 72-56, to gain momentum heading the quarterfinals.
The Tamaraws are the top seed in Group B after their flawless 8-0 slate and would await the No. 4 ranked team in Group A in the knock-out quarters.
