MANILA, Philippines- Hope Christian School came away with a pair of straight-set victories to tie De La Salle-Zobel in the Girls A lead while University of the East took control in Boys B of the first Dunkin’ Big Dunk high school beach volleyball tournament at the UE-Caloocan sand courts last Friday.
The HCS spikers dominated International Christian Academy, 11-2, 11-3, then returned hours later to blast Grace Christian College, 11-6, 11-4, for a share of the lead with the Alabang-based squad in the tournament sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts and organized by Metro Sports.
UE, on the other hand, thwarted St. Joseph College, 11-7, 17-15, then outplayed St. James Anglers (SJA), 11-6, 11-2, to seize the solo lead in Boys B with a 2-0 card.
Hope Mighty Sports also posted a 2-0 mark in Girls B as it toppled St. James Anglers, 11-8, 12-10, while ICA held off GCC, 11-8, 11-7, for a 1-3 mark in Girls A division of the event backed by Shakey’s, LBC, Toby’s Sports, Mikasa, Asics and Mighty Sports.
The top two teams after the single round elims from each group will advance to the crossover semifinal round with the winners clashing for the crown. Matches are race-to-11, best-of-three sets using the rally point system.
Makati High School paces Boys A with a 2-0 slate, beating GCC, 11-4, 11-2, and St. James-Malabon (SJM), 11-7, 11-9, recently while St. James-Parañaque is in second with a 1-0 card and SJM in third with a 1-1 slate.
Elizabeth Seton School, meanwhile, trails UE in Boys B with a 1-0 card with SJA in third with a 1-2 mark and St. Joseph College still winless in two starts.
UST, meanwhile, trails HMS in Girls B with a 2-1 record with ESS posting a 1-0 card and UE toting a 1-1 mark.
