MANILA, Philippines - Luzon regional topnotcher Masbate bucked the absence of a practice game as it edged Mindanao second placer Dipolog, 1-nil, at the start of the PFF Suzuki Under-23 National Cup in Panaad, Bacolod City yesterday.
The Masbate squad arrived late Thursday evening and faced the Dipolog booters without the benefit of a practice round. But coach Kim Versales’ charges played true to form with midfielders Aaron Altiche and David Fornea leading the attack.
Masbate had a series of scoring chances with Fornea blasting a cross past Dipolog’s goalkeeper in the 15th minute.
Fornea was actually sent off in the second half for a reckless challenge on Jerry Barbaso and for pushing the referee. But Dipolog failed to score from long shots that either went wide or straight to the keeper.
Over at the UP Los Banos pitch in Laguna, Iloilo flashed awesome form and routed UP Los Banos, 7-nil, to pace the Group B quarterfinals.
Midfielder Chester Braga scored a brace for the Ilonggos (50, 54) while Peter Sobredo (20), Jewer Vergara (39), Romeo Martinez (60), Shirmar Felongco (71) and German Doronilla (79) added a goal apiece.
In the second match in Los Baños, Davao and host team Laguna battled to a 2-2 draw.
