P-Noy upbeat on Open return to Asian Tour
MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino has expressed elation over the return of the Philippine Open to the Asian Tour, saying it underscores the country’s status as world-class host even as he urged the Filipino golfers to make full use of their competitive edge against a field teeming with talent.
“The return of the Philippine Open to the Asian Tour reflects, by and large, the confidence our country enjoys in the international community,” said the President. “I take pride in the affirmation that our country is on track in its pursuit of stability and equitable progress.”
He added that the “rebirth” of Asia’s oldest golf championship comes at a time when the country itself is experiencing a revitalization in the field of sports, wherein the Filipinos have established a distinguished roster that includes the golfers.
“Once again, our athletes are gaining world acclaim, thus confirming their inherent talent. It is my deepest hope that this event will not only stir up your competitive drive but also awaken the spirit of camaraderie and friendship within all of you,” Aquino said.
The National Golf Association of the Phils., the governing body of golf in the country, Wack Wack Golf and Country Club and chief presentor International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) worked hand in hand to raise the minimum prize fund of $300,000 according to Asian Tour’s standards, bringing the Open back to the lucrative circuit’s calendar after a two-year absence.
The other sponsors of the event, held under the auspices of the National Golf Association of the Phils., are San Miguel Corp., Globe Telecoms, Lexus, HSBC and National Golf Association of the Phils. with Srixon, Ricoh, BlackBerry, Splash Corp., Inetol, Motorola, Lancaster Hotel and Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria as supporters. For his part, Wack Wack president Philip Ella Juico has guaranteed a four-day showcase of shotmaking among the leading players in the region and other parts of the world on a layout spruced up to championship form and condition.
“Year 2011 takes a greater meaning for WW because it will mark the return of the Philippine Open to the good graces of the Asian Tour, meaning the region’s spotlight is on us to deliver a smashing hosting job for the rest of our brothers to emulate,” said Juico.
He added: “Wack Wack Golf and Country Club has been the home of many Philippine Opens in the past – 23 to be exact – a testament to its competence as a world-class venue for the best golfing talents not only in our local shores, but of the Asian region, as well.”
Angelo Que, who edged Malaysian ace Danny Chia to win the 2008 crown, heads the local challenge along with fellow Asian Tour regulars Juvic Pagunsan, Tony Lascuna, Mars Pucay and youthful Miguel Tabuena while Thailand, bannered by aces Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Chinnarat Phadungsil and veteran Prayad Marksaeng, leads the crack foreign roster in the seventh leg of the Asian Tour.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive, a noted shooter, also asked the foreign competitors and other guests to explore the many attractions the country has to offer and experience Filipino hospitality.
“I wish everyone a pleasant stay and I convey my heartfelt congratulations to the winners and to all those involved in ensuring the successful staging of the event,” said Aquino.
