Juntaphil Cup gets going in Baguio

MANILA, Philippines - The Junior Tennis Association of the Philippines (Juntaphil) kicks off its two-tournament summer program aimed at boosting the country’s junior tennis as it holds the Juntaphil Cup beginning today at the Baguio Tennis Club outdoor courts in Burnham Park.

A banner field is vying for top honors in various age-divisions in the six-day tournament, which features players from the Ilocos region and other northern provinces as well as those in Central Luzon and Metro Manila.

The Baguio meet is a Philta-sanctioned Group 2 event organized by Juntaphil and sponsored by First Gen Corp. and Smart Communications with Techni-fibre Balls, APM-Agricom, Pet-One, Accel, Kimura Chaves and Friends of Juntaphil as backers.

Events on tap are the 10-and-under unisex, 12-, 14-, 16-, 18-under and 21-under age groups for boys and girls singles.

Meanwhile, the next tournament, dubbed the fourth First Gen/Juntaphil Metro Age Group Championships, will be held May 2-8 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The Group I event is expected to lure the country’s leading players and rising stars in the ranks. It will feature competitions in the 10-unisex, 10-, 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-under singles categories for both the boys’ and girls divisions.

Also on tap is the doubles competitions in the 10-unisex, 14- and 18-under classes for boys and girls.

Registration is ongoing with deadline set at 12 noon tomorrow (April 27). Fee is pegged at P300 per category with the draw to be held on April 28 at 10 a.m. at the Philta office.
