Suba brothers finish 1-2 in Petron Karting
MANILA, Philippines - Brothers VJ and RR Suba of Fern-C Racing teamed up to score a 1-2 finish against the top favorites recently in the second of the 2011 Petron Karting Super Series at the Batangas Racing Circuit in Rosario, Batangas.
It was one wild, unpredictable battle for the top spot throughout but solid tandem and defensive strategy steered the Subas, sons of a racing mechanic, to their big upset victories in this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) and sponsored by Petron, San Miguel Corp., Denso Iridium Power, Motorstar Eastway and Yokohama Phils.
After wresting the top spots midway through the final race, the two stayed close behind each other and gave the top drivers, including defending champion Stefano Marcelo of Maranello-San Miguel Corporation and Roby Benito of Ready2Race little chance to overtake.
VJ, who started sixth in the grid, quickly moved his way up to the top and completed the 10-lap race in 12 minutes, 57.127 seconds to capture both the ROK senior and ROK overall titles.
RR checked in 0.155 seconds later and claimed the runner-up finish in the ROK overall division and the ROK junior crown.
Marcelo Racing teammates Daniel Miranda of Cebuana Lhuillier and Stefano Marcelo failed to pass the Suba brothers and ended third and fourth, respectively, while Juha Turalba of Ready2Race was fifth.
Miranda also finished second in the ROK Junior division over the more experienced Franco Reyes of Jet Racing with Estefano Rivera of Fern-C Racing and Jette Calderon of Jet Racing winding up fourth and fifth.
Newcomer Daniel Castaneda of Ready2Race also pulled a big upset in the SQ Karting Overall class over Don Batino and Peterson Lim of Jet Racing, with Nike Mora and Rolan de Guzman checking in fourh and fifth, respectively.
Starting fourth in the final race, Castaneda managed to pass one driver after another until he grabbed the top spot and pulled away for good to wrap up the eight-lap race in 11:00.598 or 2.736 seconds ahead of Batino.
Castaneda also copped the SQ Karting Novice crown over Gonzalo Julian Jr. and third placer Mark Laxa.
Batino went home with the SQ Expert crown over Peterson Lim and Nike Mora while De Guzman bagged the SQ Veterans crown over Julian Jr. and expat John Effinger
