Alcala bows to Hong Kong top bet
MANILA, Philippines - Malvinne Ann Alcala succumbed to the power-hitting and versatile Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong and took a 10-21, 16-21 setback in the quarterfinal round of the New Zealand International Challenge 2011 in Auckland, New Zealand Friday.
Alcala, who made quite an impression when she topped two higher-ranked rivals in the round of 32 and Last 16 phases, tried to hang on in the second set but failed to neutralize the top-seeded Yip’s superb all-around game.
The 16-year-old top Filipina player, ranked No. 113 in the world, earlier subdued world No. 84 and former leading Phl shuttler Karyn Velez, who is now with the US team, then upended No. 66 Ana Rovita to reach the Last 8.
The reigning national Open and U-19 champion resumes her chase for world ranking points in the Australian Open Gold Grand Prix 2011 beginning tomorrow.
