Patrombon seals semis duel vs Krstin
MANILA, Philippines – Top seed Jeson Patrombon fought back from a first-set setback with a sweep of the next two as he repulsed Teodor Nicolae Marin of Romania, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the semifinal round of the ITF/LTAT Junior Tennis Championship in Nonthaburi, Thailand yesterday.
The 17-year-old Patrombon recovered from a slow start as he broke his 10th ranked rival once in the second set then dominated the decider to set up a semis clash with seventh seed Pedja Krstin of Serbia.
Unlike Patrombon, the power-hitting 16-year-old Krstin, a semifinalist in the ITF-sanctioned event in South America recently, disposed of unseeded Enzo Couacaud of France in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Iligan City ace, currently No. 9 in the world junior ranking, earlier toppled Sweden’s Morgan Johansson, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round then scrambled past Paul Monteban of the Netherlands, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in the round-of-16.
Patrombon, however, failed to sustain his winning form in the doubles as he and partner Kiwi Jaden Grinter fell to the second seed tandem of Krstin and Maxim Lunkin of Russia, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8, in the semis.
The Patrombon-Grinter gained 50 ITF ranking points for reaching the quarters.
