Douthit naturalization bill to lapse this week

- Joey Villar -

MANILA, Philippines –  American Marcus Douthit could become a naturalized Filipino in a week’s time, making him eligible to play for Smart Gilas when it vies for a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.

Outgoing Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala said the naturalization papers of the 6-10 Douthit in Malacañang could lapse into law exactly a week from now if President Aquino leaves it unsigned.

“It will lapse into law in a week, which would automatically grant Filipino citizenship to Marcus (Douthit),” said Eala.

But he said it would be better if the President gives his official blessing by signing the naturalization papers of Marcus.

Otherwise, Douthit, who joined the team last year, will just have to wait for the month-long grace period for it to lapse into law.

If approved, Douthit will play a key role in the Nationals’ quest to nail the lone berth to London by topping the FIBA-Asia Championship slated Sept. 15-25 in Wuhan, China.

Eala said that Antipolo City Rep. Robbie Puno, who authored the Douthit Bill, will be the first one to be informed of Douthit’s status after the prescribed date expires.

Meanwhile, Eala said he would file an accomplishment report before he officially steps down on March 16.

“I would still be in the board though to help organize the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup to be staged in the country this May,” said Eala.
