Three cheers for St. Scho, St. Paul Pasig

- Olmin Leyba -

MANILA, Philippines –  St. Scholastica’s College and St. Paul College-Pasig took the limelight yesterday as they ruled the season-ending Cheerleading Competition of the 41st WNCAA at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Deadset on making up for last year’s disappointment, the SSC Scions put up a near-flawless performance to beat 10 other rivals and reclaim the seniors division crown with 167.5 points. Host Centro Escolar University (CEU) took runner-up honors with 162 points while Miriam College finished third with 158.5 points.

“The girls executed nearly all their stunts without mistakes, a testament to their doubled-up efforts and total commitment to their campaign this year,” said Choy Quesada of the SSC PE Department.

The Scions had previously won eight straight seniors diadems but missed a podium finish last season, their bid stymied by injuries to dancers. Determined to get back to winning, the girls started preparing for the competition right in the first semester.

Also enjoying their shining moment were the pep squads of SPC-P, which romped off with grade school and high school titles right on their first crack.

St. Paul’s tallied 166.5 points to nose out Poveda (162.5) and De La Salle-Zobel (155) for the elementary plum. Its secondary entries duplicated the feat by logging a winning 192.5 points over Poveda (185) and St. Stephen’s HS (151).

“It was the girls’ heartfelt and clean execution of their routines that likely won the judges’ nod,” said SPCP mentor Ramon Pagaduan IV.

The Cheerleading event served as the culminating activity of the 41st season of the country’s premier women’s collegiate league.

Season 41 host CEU, through its EVP Dr. Ricardo de Leon, formally turned over the WNCAA banner to next year’s host, Rizal Techonological University, through its VP for academic affairs Dr. Myrna Profeta.

WNCAA president Vivian Manila likewise formally declared hostilities in the 41st season closed.
