Letran cops net title via highest tiebreak

- Joey Villar -

MANILA, Philippines - Letran relied on its highest tiebreak score to beat St. Benilde and Perpetual Help for the men’s division title in the 86th NCAA lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Needing just a win to nail the crown, the Knights floundered and dropped a painful 1-2 decision to the more determined Blazers, forging a three-way logjam on top on 2-1 (win-loss) slates after the elimination round.

But the Muralla-based netters emerged with the highest tiebreaker score after coming up with more matches won, 4-2, compared to St. Benilde’s 3-3 and Perpetual Help’s 2-4 for second and third places, respectively.

Zamboanga del Norte native Dave Regencia and Carlito Rojo made it a triple victory for the Knights after clinching the MVP and Coach of the Year trophies, respectively. It was the power-hitting Regencia’s third straight MVP plum.

San Beda, for its part, reigned supreme in the high school section after romping over San Sebastian, 3-0, to complete a three-game title sweep.

Deo Talatagan practically carried the Cubs on his shoulders as he nailed the MVP juniors’ award.
