Weary So quits Aeroflot tourney
MANILA, Philippines - Citing fatigue, GM Wesley So withdrew from the Aeroflot Open Chess Championships after another draw in the sixth round at the Hotel Gamma-Delta in Moscow Sunday.
“I can’t think very well right now. I’m just too tired from the last tournament (Corus),” said So. “In my last few games, I made a lot of blunders.”
He added that he would need a long rest and spend more time in training.
The decision came after So settled for his fifth draw, this time against FM Roman Nechepurenko of Russia in only 28 moves of the Queen’s Indian. He had 2.5 points.
Meanwhile, GM John Paul Gomez lost for the first time in six games and yielded the lead in Group B.
GM Dorian Rogozenco of Romania stopped Gomez’s two-game win streak with the Filipino slipping to joint fifth with 4.5 points.
But GM Darwin Laylo kept the Phl’s title bid in the tournament, beating Bayarsiakhan Gundavaa of Mongolia to gain a share of the lead with Rogozenco and two others with five points.
Moscow Open joint runner-up IM Oliver Barbosa defeated Mikhail Antipov of Russia in 78 moves of the Slav to raise his record to 3.5 points.
