Miñoza's game gone with the wind in $1.8M Boca Raton tiff

-

MANILA, Philippines - Frankie Miñoza blew a decent first round stint in the $1.8 million Allianz Championship with an awful 82 in the second round, tumbling down to the tailend of the 80-player field at the Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Florida Saturday.

Minoza, who hit five birdies against four bogeys for a one-under 71 in his US Seniors Tour debut Friday, dropped three shots right in his first hole at the backside of the par-72 layout, making a triple-bogey on the par-4 No. 10. Although he birdied the par-5 No. 11, he groped for form on a windy day the rest of the way, making four bogeys and stumbling with two double-bogeys for a 41-41 card.

That 10-over par round dropped the Filipino bet from joint 44th to a share of 76th with three others, including Sandy Lyle at 153, 20 shots behind new leader Peter Senior heading to the final round of the 54-hole championship, the second leg of this year’s US Seniors Champions Tour.

Senior, who opened with a six-under 66, sustained his hot run and shot a 67 for a 133 as he took a one-stroke lead over Rod Spittle and Tom Lehman, who had a 67 and 69, respectively.

Senior trailed Spittle most of the day, but birdied the par-5 18th to grab the lead as Spittle holed out with a bogey.

Hale Irwin fired a 68 and tied with Russ Cochran, who had a 67, for fourth at 136.

Jay Don Blake, who led in the first round with a 64, sputtered with a 73 and slid to joint seventh at 137.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer shot a 72 on Saturday and was seven strokes back.
