With no taker, Aquino takes exit

-

MANILA, Philippines - Marlou Aquino wants to play for the remainder of his existing contract, hoping for a chance to end his playing career with his original team Barangay Ginebra.

His wish may not be granted, though.

The 16-year PBA veteran has found himself without a team on Barako Bull’s decision to take a leave of absence in the coming Commissioners Cup.

The 6-foot-9 behemoth found no taker either on the dispersal draft conducted by the PBA involving the Barako players Monday.

Aquino now faces the prospect of spending the remaining part of his contract on the sideline. His contract expires in August.

“If there are really no teams interested, I have no other choice but to retire and start a business,” said Aquino.

He thought a return stint with Ginebra should have been a perfect ending to his long, colorful career.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said it’s up to the management to decide.

“What I know is that the management wants the team to get young. I don’t think we will achieve that by getting Marlou,” said Uichico.

“Besides, we have Eric (Menk), Rico (Villanueva), Yancy (de Ocampo) and Billy (Mamaril). Then there will be the import. I don’t think Marlou can get playing time and have his graceful exit with us,” Uichico added.

Aquino, among the best big men ever seen in the PBA, started his PBA career as Ginebra’s top draft pick in 1996.

He had his best years in the pros with the Kings from 1996-1999, winning one championship and earning spots in the Mythical First Five twice.

He was traded to Sta. Lucia for Jun Limpot in 2000, playing 10 seasons with the Realtors before being dealt to Meralco then to Barako Bull this campaign.

Through the 2010 season, the former Adamson Falcon had 7,744 points, 3,840 rebounds, 1,128 assists and 1,125 blocks in 631 games. – Nelson Beltran with report from Fidel Mangonon
