Maroons upend Warriors in UAAP volley
MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines prevailed over University of the East, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, in a battle of cellar-dwelling teams yesterday in the UAAP Season 73 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena.
Angeli Araneta sizzled with 25 points highlighted by 20 kills while Carmela Lopez added 19 spiked by five blocks as the Lady Maroons climbed out of the bottom with their third win against nine losses.
The Lady Warriors, who were led by Jimberly Dawn Dizon’s 18 and Mary Cristel Rosale’s 15, took the place of the UP belles at the cellar with their 10th setback against three victories.
UP and UE are both out of the running as La Salle (10-1), University of Santo Tomas (8-3), Ateneo (8-4) and Adamson (8-4) have already secured the slots in the Final Four.
In the men’s side, Adamson trounced UE, 25-15, 25-10, 25-14, to improve to 5-8 (win-loss) and maintain its fifth place standing.
Ron Jay Galang and Armando Maleon punched in 15 markers apiece for the Falcons, who are only looking to end their season on a high note after missing the last semis berth.
Ateneo turned back National U in a tight contest, 25-19, 24-26, 18-25, 25-19, 15-7, to nail its fourth win in 13 outings.
The Bulldogs dropped to 2-10, slightly ahead of the Warriors’ 1-11 slate.
