Manotoc-Lorenzo pair tops Yulo memorial golf

MANILA, Philippines –  Gabriel Manotoc and guest partner Sebastian Lorenzo combined for 159 points to capture the overall championship in the Jose Yulo Memorial tournament at the north and south courses of the Canlubang Golf and Country Club in Laguna recently.

Manotoc and Lorenzo teamed up for 79 points under the PAL Stableford scoring system in the opener of the 36-hole tournament, then pooled an 80 in the second round to beat the Antonio Ong-Marvin Caparos tandem by five.

The Manotoc-Lorenzo duo took home a pair of Sony 32” LCD TVs with DVDs while Ong and Caparos, who finished with 154 points after two 77s, got two Sharp DVD home theater systems.

Yasuhito Ito and Toru Takeda strung up a 77 and a 75 for a 152 and finished third in the 33rd staging of the annual tournament held in honor of the late former Speaker. They brought home two Toshiba LCD 24” TVs.

Also hogging the spotlight in the event, backed by hole-in-one sponsors Mitsubishi Motors Phils., Diamond Motors Phils., Club Car Phils., Pacsports Phils., The Turf Company and Dynamic Sports Corp., was Dan Florentino, who drove home a brand-new Mitsubishi Lancer EX GLX as grand raffle prize.

Other backers were Golden Nutritious Foods Corp., ABW Whealth, Nature’s Spring, Jose Ma. Hechanova, Seamecor, Inc., Phil. Spring Water, Dusseland Inc.-Pocari Sweat, Golfworx, Shell Phils. and Oakley.

Leading the daily winners were Agustin Rojas and David Mercado, who combined for 79 points to nip the Ramon Regala-Sonny Pangilinan pair (78) at the north course on the first day and Akira Ishida-Christian Lozano, who scored 77 points and beat Hiroshi Yasuo and Keiichi Iwahara by two points in the second day.

Gooby Yulo and Sak Castro made 80 points and edged Rudy Fulo and Jimmy Bautista by one on the first day at the south course while Hector Rivera and Roque Fado shot a 78 to take the second day honors over the Santiago Santos-Walter Khu tandem, which pooled a 76.

Joey Huerva and Dave Hernandez led the consolation winners, combining for 292 points to bag the team low gross honors while Tommy Manotoc took the individual title (low gross) with 141 points, nipping Abe Rosal in the countback.

Rey Ocampo took the individual low net title with 135 points, edging Philip Brodett, who had 136.
