Archers notch eighth win in UAAP volley

- Olmin Leyba -

MANILA, Philippines - De La Salle University scuttled University of the East, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19, to notch its eighth win yesterday in the UAAP Season 73 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena.

Abigail Marano and skipper Charleen Cruz posted 12 points apiece as the Lady Archers somehow got back at the Lady Warriors, who beat them in the first round, 25-0, 25-0, 25-0.

DLSU actually won that initial match but the win was forfeited by the UAAP board last week due to an infraction on league rules committed by Carmela Garbin and Clarisse Yeung. They played in another tournament without permission from the league.

Garbin and Yeung had since been suspended for the rest of the season but their absence hardly mattered as DLSU (8-1) stayed ahead of defending champion University of Santo Tomas (7-2).

Jimberly Dawn Diaz had 13 markers for UE (3-6), which played without Alyssa Paril, who was likewise sanctioned for the same reason as the DLSU volleybelles.

In men’s play, pacesettting Far Eastern University turned back Ateneo, 25-23, 25-14, 25-16, for its ninth straight triumph.

Nestor Molate scored 16 while Karl Ian dela Calzada and Rodolfo Labrador Jr. added 13 and 10, respectively, as the Tams remained spotless.

Narciso Intal Jr. paced the Eagles (3-6) with seven kills and two aces.

DLSU maintained its No. 3 position with 6-3 after defeating UE, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21.

Chris Macasaet and Emilio Lee combined for 27 points as the Archers sent the Warriors (1-8) down to the the cellar along with National U.
