Orendain, other seeds in quarters

MANILA, Philippines –  Top seed Betto Orendain and other seeded bets hurdled their respective foes to reach the boys’ 16-under quarterfinals of the Andrada Cup age-group tennis championships yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Orendain blasted Eric Jed Olivarez, 6-1, 6-0, to vault into the Last 8 against No. 5 Juan Alfonso Opulencia, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over John Andrei Rodriguez.

No. 3 Calvin Canlas escaped past Andrew Joshua Cano, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 10-4, to advance against either Jose Nicolas Cano or No. 7 Daniel Villasenor. Cano and Villasenor were playing their second-round matchup at presstime.

Setting up their own quarters showdown were No. 4 Romnee Kyle Joseph, a 6-4, 7-6 (4) winner over Julian Dayrit, and No. 6 Christian San Andres, a 6-0, 6-0 victor over Mathew Sicat.

Meanwhile, giant-killer Mahmod Dimacuta stormed to the boys’ 12-U semifinals after beating Norman Gaspar, 6-1, 6-3. He was responsible for the biggest upset in the annual netfest so far, upstaging No. 2 Cenon Gonzales Jr., 6-3, 1-6, 10-7, in the previous round.

The rest of the seeds in the 12-U booked tickets to the Last 8.

No. 1 Mimo Tomacruz flogged Joseph Tiamson, 6-1, 6-0; No. 3 Jerome Romualdez walloped Diego Dayrit, 6-1, 6-0; No. 4 Albert Lim Jr. upended Emmanuel Fuellas, 6-1, 6-0; No. 5 Jacob Martin outplayed Vincent Jerome Anida, 6-0, 5-7, 10-0; No. 6 Mar Raphael Teng edged Justine Suarez, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 10-8; and No. 7 Manuel Balce III slammed Pete Coteron, 6-2, 6-2.

Top seed Christian San Andres led the march into the second round of the 14-U.

San Andres clobbered Stefan Suarez, 6-1, 6-2, forging a duel with Jerome Romualdez, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Jeon Jeheon.

Also through were Brysl Libao, a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Fernando Arguelles; Mohamad Amerol, a 6-4, 6-4 victor over Manuel Balce III; and Matthew Tan, a 6-2, 7-6 (4) winner over John Angelo Cerezo.
