Delos Reyes heads first day winners

MANILA, Philippines –  Darwin delos Reyes drubbed Frednel Sanduco, 7-5, 6-0, to lead the opening day winners in the premier boys’ 18-under division of the 22nd Andrada Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The win set Delos Reyes up for a second round duel with top seed John Altiche, who took a bye in the first round.

Also advancing to the Round of 16 were Daniel Um, Richard Martinez, Ahmad Armama, No. 7 Ellison Miles Bingcang, Kyle Cordero, Romnee Kyle Joseph, Arjay Canoza and Vernon Huibonhua.

Um bundled out Jasper Tan, 6-4, 6-1, to advance against No. 5 Dheo Talatayod while Martinez outplayed Andrew John Cano, 6-4, 6-1, to move forward against No. 4 Gabriel Gutierrez; No. 7 Ellison Miles Bingcang edged Jose Nicolas Cano, 7-5, 6-2, to reach the next round against Kyle Cordero, 6-0, 6-2 winner over Matthew Sicat.

Joseph eked out a 6-4, 6-2 win over Romaine Lepoutre, for a Last 16 berth against No. 3 Enrique Ferrer while Huibonhua tripped Mico Lugay, 7-5, 6-1, for a second round duel with Canoza, who scored a walkover victory versus No. 8 Jammie dela Paz.

Patricia Paez spearheaded the march in the girls’ 18-U, pulling off a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 come-from-behind win over Arvi Bernardo. Paez next battles No. 2 seed Louise Alexandra Lopez.

Akiko de Guzman also netted a second round spot against No. 4 Samantha Coyuito after shutting out opening day rival Sachiko Numano, 6-0, 6-0.

In the boys’ 14-U, second seed Daniel Villasenor whipped Jose Felipe Mapa, 6-1, 6-1, while Jerome Romualdez dispatched Korean bet Jeon Jeheon, 6-1, 6-0, and Julian Dayrit foiled Nicolo Hernandez, 6-0, 6-1 to barge into the next round.
