So downs Carlos, tows chess winners
MANILA, Philippines – Super GM Wesley So downed NM Leo Carlos in 31 moves of a Sicilian Alapin to lead other two winners with three remaining rounds in the Young Knights Chess League being held at Eton Cyberpod Corinthian located on EDSA corner Ortigas Ave., Pasig.
So beat Mark Nazario and Vic Neil Villanueva in the early rounds and have a perfect score of three points after three rounds of play along with fellow GM Ronald Dableo and FM Jan Emmanuel Garcia.
During the opening So delivered an inspirational talk “stating that his starting point was the Milo Checkmate program and through hardwork and perseverance brought him to his present status.”
So attended the Milo Checkmate clinic last 2001 and after nine years attained his super grandmaster title – feat phenomenal for his young age.
Other round winners were Samson Lim, Mj Turqueza, NM Emmanuel Emperado, Gabby Layugan, Timothy So Kua and Eugene de Ramos. Games resume Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Tournament Arbiter is IA Elias Lao.
