'Big Time' Billones shines for Patriots

-

MANILA, Philippines - One good reason why the AirAsia-Philippine Patriots are on the rebound is because of the solid performance of local star Egay Billones.

Fondly called “Big Time” by his peers, Billones has consistently dished out significant numbers for the Patriots who are out to win a second straight championship in the six-nation tournament.

For coming with clutch plays, the Patriots ended a three-game skid and are now on a two-game winning run.

“He’s the catalyst of the team, and I hope he will continue to inspire his teammates to play much harder,” said co-team owner Mikee Romero. “He’s the type of a guy who will do everything for the team.”

Out to prove that he still has what it takes to win big games, Billones sizzled for 21 points, including a three-point shot that helped them secure a 80-73 win over the Singapore Slingers last Dec. 18.

Things are indeed looking bright for the 5-foot-11 veteran guard.

“Given another chance to play in the PBA, he can give you quality minutes. He’s still tough and fast,” said Romero, who co-owns the Patriots with businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco. “He can still give young players a run for their money.”

The Patriots are sporting a second best 8-4 record, just a game behind the Chang Thailand Slammers who are toting a 9-3 card.

In 12 games with the Patriots, Billones averaged 13.4 points to lead the locals.

Also getting a big break is former La Salle star Junjun Cabatu who has normed 8.6 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Other ex-PBA players who are contributing to the cause of the Patriots are Chito Jaime and Benedict Fernandez.

“They’re still young, so they can still improve their game as what they are doing with the Patriots,” said Romero.
