Rudas scrambles past Japanese foe

-

MANILA, Philippines - Marinel Rudas survived Japanese rival Natsumi Chimura and carved out a tough 7-6, 7-6 victory to advance to the second round of the Phinma International Junior Tennis Week 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.

Rudas steeled herself up in the tiebreak in each set to fend off Chimura and arrange a duel with China’s Siyu Qin, who defeated Ylia Sudnikova of Russia.

But while Rudas advanced, the other Filipina bets fell by the wayside, bowing to their foreign counterparts in the event presented by Phinma Properties and supported by the ITF Grand Slam Development Fund.

Marian Capadocia retired in the second set due to injury while trailing Varunya Wongteanchai, 4-6, 0-3.

Louise Alexandra Lopez also took a stinging 1-6, 0-6 loss to Tanaporn Thongsing of Thailand.

Patricia Joy Oretza also bowed to Sofia Dmitrieva of Russia, 6-3, 6-3.

Other players who advanced to the next round were Dina Karina of Indonesia in the girls division and Chung-Sheng Yu of Chinese Taipei in the boys side.

Karina scuttled Ekaterina Ylueva of Russia, 6-1, 6-4, while Chung repulsed Yuki Muramatsu of Japan, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
