Former tour champ shines anew in Games

- Gerry Carpio -

MANILA, Philippines - By winning gold in the men’s individual road race, Wong Kam Po, 37, of Hong Kong became the most successful road cyclist in the Asian Games. Park Sungbaek of Korea crossed the finish line in Guanzhou first, but was relegated for illegal sprinting.

Wong, the only foreigner to win the Marlboro Tour title with his debut win in 1997, won the men’s road race at the Asian Games for the third time, 1998, 2006 and 2010.

At the 2002 Asian Games Wong won the bronze.

With his win in Guangzhou, Wong collected his fourth consecutive medal at an Asian Games in the men’s road race.

Wong is also the first cyclist to maintain his title in the men’s road race.

With four road cycling and two track cycling medals Wong ties snooker player Ka Chun Marco Fu’s record – six medals – at the Asian Games for a competitor from Hong Kong. Fu claimed the gold medal in the 2010 Games.

Aaron Eng Chuan Kong of Malaysia scored 801 (268, 235, 298) to smash the single game record in Asian Games team event in bowling.

He missed out on the perfect 300 mark by just two points in his final game, but he easily erased the Team record of 734 set in the 2006 Doha Games by Japan.
