Chessers strike back

GUANGZHOU – The Philippines bounced back in the Asian Games chess competition as it dismantled Bangladesh, 3-1, to regain a share of third after three rounds at the Guangzhou Chess Institute here yesterday.

GM Wesley So outplayed GM Niaz Murshed in their top board encounter while GM Joey Antonio, who finished 13th in rapid chess, whipped FM Ahmed Minhazuddin to lead Phl’s charge following a 1-3 loss to powerhouse China in the second round.

GM John Paul Gomez settled for a draw with GM Ziaur Rahman, so did GM Eugene Torre who split the point with FM Shakil Abu Sufian on the lower boards.
