Cruz, TLYC share regatta honors

MANILA, Philippines - Dennis Cruz and Taal Lake Yacht Club bagged top honors in the kickoff event of the two-day Cleanergy Travelers Series regatta circuit in Puerto Azul, Cavite recently.

Cruz, a veteran open water and Hobie sailor, topped the first day action where the fleet raced from Puerto Azul to Corregidor Island before rounding Caballo Island and finishing at Calaybne Resort.

The day’s second race had the catamarans starting from Calaybne and battling to round Fort Drum before sailing back to Puerto Azul.

The TLYC, led by commodore Peter Capotosto and crew Carla Kramer, won the Hobie 16 class with Monchu Garcia and Glenn Everett finishing second and third, respectively, in the four windward-leeward course races.

Paolo Lorenzo and Cons Castaneda swept line honors in the Getaway class of the event, the first of the seven-stage circuit sponsored by Aboitiz-Power Corp.

Organized by the Philippine Inter-Island Sailing Federation (Philsaf), the Cleanergy Sailing Series resumes off the shores in Tali Beach, Nasugbu and the Punta Fuego Sailing Fiesta.

The Taal Lake round-the-volcano classic, meanwhile, will be held this weekend while the Philippine Hobie 16 National is set Jan. 29-30, 2011. The Cleanergy 11th Philippine Hobie Challenge will be staged in February while the San Teodoro, Batangas regatta and the Subic Bay regatta will be held in March and April, 2011, respectively.
