UST lady tracksters rule PSC-Unigames

MANILA, Philippines - Defending women’s division champion University of Sto. Tomas dominated athletics by ruling 16 of the 20 events disputed in the 15th Philippine Sports Commission-University Games (PSC-UniGames) in Dumaguete recently.

The España-based tracksters swept all the individual titles, including the 100m, 200m, and 400m, 100m hurdles, and 400m hurdles, sprint events and the 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, 10,000m runs. They also won the 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay, 4x400m relay, and the classical relay events. UST also copped the women’s long jump and triple jump events.

Ateneo took two golds in the discus throw and shot put, University of Mindanao ruled the high jump event, and Rizal Technological University (RTU) bagged the javelin throw gold.

Last year’s third placer Ateneo, meanwhile, won six of the 20 events in the men’s side, taking the 100m and 200m sprints, 110m hurdles, discus throw, shot put, and the classical relay events.

Six teams won two golds each but De La Salle University took second overall with more silver medals.

RTU, last year’s champion, shared third place with the University of the East.

Other teams that won a pair of gold medals were College of St. Benilde, UST, and Brokenshire while La Salle-Dasmariñas and University of Mindanao won one gold medal each.

Meanwhile, defending champion Adamson hopes to make a return trip to women’s basketball finals as it plays St. Louis University while WNCAA champion Lyceum Philippines University (LPU) clashes with UP-Diliman in the other semis match.

In men’s basketball, Ateneo poised for its third straight UniGames title as it topped Group A with four wins with Mindanao State University-Marawi tipped to clinch the other semis berth.

Lyceum also clinched a berth in the next round in Group B with FEU tipped to book the other slot in the event sponsored by TAO Corp., Gatorade, Sandugo Sandals, Red Bull, Mikasa, Molten, Butterfly, and the city of Dumaguete and the province of Negros Oriental with Silliman University as host school.

PCCL Visayas champion West Negros University leads the way in Group C with three straight wins and is expected to meet Adamson for the top spot in the group. National University has two wins and is gunning for the No. 1 spot in Group D.
