MANILA, Philippines - San Beda blasted St. Benilde, 3-1, to complete its sweep of the first round of the 86th NCAA table tennis men’s tournament at The Arena in San Juan City recently.
Reigning MVP Japeth Adas and Nico Cruz won their singles matches to make up for the loss by Louie Ramos and Julius Vista in the doubles section.
Cruz trounced Edward Ramos, 11-3, 11-5, 11-4; Adasa walloped Elmer Flores, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9; while Adasa closed it out in the reverse singles with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 win over Ramos.
The Lions will try to go for another sweep of the second round to claim the outright championship.
In women’s action, St. Benilde overpowered Letran, 3-0, to likewise complete a sweep of the first round.
Marian Sanchez downed Katherin Vinas, 12-10, 12-10, 9-11, 11-3, while Lhynne Cruz whipped Princess Coching, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8, 11-6, in the singles matches.
The tandem of Janine Dy and Mazy Ann Terciano sealed the shutout win with a 6-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 triumph over Rose Ann Cacao and Annabelle Loresto.
San Beda, meanwhile, also pulled off a sweep in the juniors’ section with 3-0 wins over Letran and San Sebastian to improve to 8-0 (win-loss).
