Bad Boy Floyd

THE GAME OF MY LIFE - Bill Velasco -

Don’t look now, but Floyd Mayweather has further weakened his own position in trying to get a fight with Rep. Manny Pacquiao. Friday in Las Vegas, the self-styled “pretty boy” of boxing was arrested, stemming from the alleged theft of an iPhone from his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris, mother of three of his four children. The value of the stolen phone, priced at over $250, makes the crime not just petty theft, but grand larceny. An iPhone costs about $300 to $500.

Harris and Mayweather have been legally entangled before. In 2005, a`fter two counts of domestic battery, Mayweather was guaranteed prison time should he be found guilty of a third offense. Harris recanted the story, and Mayweather got another lease on life outside of prison. All in all, he has had four misdemeanor assault convictions, but nothing considered a “serious” crime. Also, under Nevada law, Floyd couldn’t be arrested more than 24 hours after the fact. But now, there are additional allegations that he punched Harris, twisted her arm, and threatened the children not to call 911 even as she pleaded with them to.

Ocie Harris is a known associate of Mayweather’s who is being accused of attempted murder. The male Harris supposedly fired six shots into a car being ridden by two men Mayweather had had an argument with. Mayweather was never implicated in the charge sheet.

All this comes a week after the boxer faced global reprisals and vilification for a racist, homophobic rant against Pacquiao, not the first time he has done so. In a video tirade, Mayweather said that he’ll beat Pacquiao if they ever get into the ring together, called the seven-time boxing champion “a little yellow chump” added that he would ask him to “make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice” and added “we’re going to cook him with some cats and dogs”, an obvious racist comment.

I think we’ve had just about enough of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

All this show is that he is uneducated, bigoted, racist and sexist. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to breathe the same air he does.

His Ustream comments merely show how stupid he really is. First of all, he lumps all Asian cultures together in his attack on Pacquiao, making references to yellow skin (not Malay, as we are), and Japanese staples like sushi. It merely illustrates that Mayweather, supposedly a symbol of an oppressed minority rising to unparalleled success, has no shred of respect for people of other racial minorities, millions of whom live in his very own United States.

On top of that, he continually thinks it’s funny to stereotype Asians and poke fun at them. Even in his apology, Mayweather says he was just having fun. But what’s fun about demeaning the largest continent in the world? Does he even realize the rich cultural diversity and heroism displayed by the peoples of Asia, which frankly outweigh the bragging that his stupidity has caused him to continually display? Perhaps he has surrounded himself with hangers-on and yes men who constantly tell him that all he does is right.

Mayweather also makes homophobic remarks and picks on Pacquiao’s size. Think about that. Mayweather is only 5’8”, which is the average size of a Filipino. It’s not as if he hovered over six feet tall. Even his Wrestlemania victory was staged. But he can’t stage-manage a win against Pacquiao, so all he does is blow enough hot air to dry a week’s worth of laundry. Nothing more, nothing less. All he has done so far is come up with excuses and dance around the fight. He doesn’t even have the machismo to put his name on the dotted line, and use his hot air to dry the ink on a fight contract.

I think the House of Representatives should pass a resolution condemning Mayweather’s actions very strongly. He did attack a duly-elected legislator of the republic. He did malign a member of an honored institution of our government. He has besmirched the reputation of a national icon. If it were any other congressman who was attacked thusly, there would have been privilege speeches on nationwide television condemning such actions.

In his apology, Mayweather said “Some of my guys are Muslim, some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, whites, it doesn’t matter.” He doesn’t even bother to look up the proper terms for the people whom he claims he has love for. In addition, Mayweather has even lied to the public about not negotiating for a fight with Pacquiao, a lie that HBO Sports itself refuted. So what the heck is Floyd Mayweather thinking each time he opens his mouth?

Given all his accusations of drug use Mayweather issues against Pacquiao, who’s the one who acts like he’s been sniffing something? Who behaves irrationally, and makes illogical comments and remarks? Who has run away from his obligations as a taxpayer? Who believes he is above the law when he beats up women and insults whole races of people? Who proudly wears his offensive insecurities like a badge of honor?

Some boxing writers have wanted to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao as a matter of honor. They want to see Mayweather face the possibility of defeat in the same honorable way as George Foreman did against Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson against Lennox Lewis, Oscar dela Hoya against Felix Trinidad, and so on. But it will probably not happen.

It’s easy to say all those things when you’re 10,000 miles away, Floyd. But we already know that you’re a coward. Now, we can add idiot to your resume.

You have something to say to that?
