UE-SBC clash kicks off LBC men's volley

-

MANILA, Philippines - University of the East seeks to live up to expectations as it takes on San Beda today at the start of the first LBC Men’s Volleyball League at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

Angeles University Foundation takes on Mayamot High School in a juniors’ match at 10 a.m after the opening ceremony to be graced by LBC Hari ng Padala chief managing officer Javier Mantecon and Freddie Infante of the organizing Metro Sports and officials of the Philippine Volleyball Federation.

Perpetual Help Laguna and AUF square off in the seniors game at 11 a.m. before the Warriors and the Lions slug it out in the main game at 1:30 p.m. in this tournament backed by Shakey’s, Toby’s Sports, Dunkin Donuts, Mikasa and Asics.

LBC, the country’s leading courier and cargo series, has taken the initiative to help revive men’s volleyball by sponsoring a league where the country’s top and upcoming players can hone up their talent and skills.

Mantecon said their aim is to help develop and popularize other sports outside of basketball.

Focus will be on the UE-San Beda duel in a clash of top teams in the UAAP and NCAA leagues.

Infante said the main goal of the tournament is to boost the grassroots development in the sport.

“There was a time a few decades back that we’re the best in Southeast Asia,” said Infante. “With this tournament, we hope we could help in reviving the sport.”

Others competing in the inaugural tournament are Ateneo, Arellano U, St. Benilde, Far Eastern U, University of the Philippines, National U, San Sebastian College, Colegio de San Agustin, Claret, Santo Tomas, Xavier and Sta. Elena HS.
