Say Chiz 5 turns back Tigerscribes

MANILA, Philippines - Ferdie Rubio hit 15 points and made four steals while Julius Manicad added 17 rebounds as the Say Chiz Smileys hammered out a 58-48 victory over the Johann Kendrick Tigerscribes Monday night in the PGBL Willie Caballes Cup basketball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Basketball Stadium.

Rubio presided in a 16-6 third quarter run while Manicad shut down the Tigerscribes’ main men as the Smileys notched their second straight victory for the early lead in the tournament held in honor of the late Manila Bulletin assistant sports editor.

In the other game, the Charlie’s Dy-Mons drew big games from Teng Masigan, Ik Aceson and Manila Bulletin scribe Jonas Terrado to hold off the San Mateo Spurs, 80-72.

Masigan had 26 points, 16 rebounds and five steals, Aceson chipped in 21 points, six rebounds and seven assists while Terrado had 12 points and 11 boards as the Dy-Mons evened their record to 1-1, tying their victim in the tournament backed by the Philippine Sportswriters Association, San Miguel Corp. and Burlington.
