MANILA, Philippines - The Kamayan Golf Club resumed its total domination over Media on Tuesday, routing the undermanned mediamen in the 24th Kamayan Saisaki Dads Golf Classic at the Aguinaldo Golf Club.
Raul Marcelo and Bart Puzon shot six-under-par 62s to lead Kamayan, which scored a 10-man total of 661 for a whopping 52-stroke victory over the hapless mediamen.
The best the Media could do was the 67 of Standard columnist Jojo Robles, but this was not enough to stop Kamayan from scoring one of the most decisive victories in the two club’s 24-year rivalry.
Media, which beat Kamayan last year to halt a five-year losing stretch, managed only a 713 total. So complete was the rout that nine of Kamayan’s 10 scorers submitted scores in the 60s while Media managed only three rounds in the 60s.
Marcelo beat Puzon on countback to win the Kamayan overall championship. The other Kamayan scorers were Dennis Reyes (64), Virgil Villavicencio (66), Art Cecilio (66), Dave Brodett (67), Jessie La’O (67), Arnold Segundo (68), Mingging Ortiz (68) and Nat Masongsong (71).
Robles was the overall Media champion while Rey Bancod was Class A champion with a 69, beating Ernie Gonzales, who also had a 69, on countback. Musong Castillo was third in the class with a 71.
Emy Arcilla topped Class B with a 70, beating Nilo Paurom, who also had a 70, on countback. Teddyvic Melendres was third with a 70.
Dick Sinchongco topped Class C with 76; Sev Sarmenta (83) took second and Chupsie Medina (85) was third.
The 10 Media scorers were Robles, Bancod, Gonzales, Arcilla, Paurom, Castillo, Jun Engracia (71), Melendres, Sinchongco and Al Mendoza (78).
Rory del Castillo was guest division champion, Cocoy Vera Perez was second and Eric Borromeo took third. The placings were decided on countback after all three finished with identical 70s.
The special prizes were won by Enzo Martinez (most number of birdies and best dressed), Del Castillo (most pars), Chris Garcia (nearest the pin on No. 9), Castillo (nearest the pin on No. 11), Chupsie Media (most accurate drive on No. 12), and Art Cecilio (early bird).
The tournament, now on its 24th consecutive year, is held in honor of Tito Eduque, the late national basketball coach and founding chairman of the Triple V Group of Restaurants. Eduque, who died in November 2001, would have turned 83 today (Thursday, Aug. 26).
