Gallent is Derby Ace new coach
MANILA, Philippines - Jorge Gallent, a multi-titled coach in the Philippine Basketball League, has been tapped to succeed Ryan Gregorio as head tactician of the B-MEG Derby Ace Llamados.
Gallent was appointed to the position Monday afternoon, selected over Koy Banal and others in the pool of coaches of the SMC group.
“He got the edge being with the team already. He’s already well familiar with the players. That’s a big consideration,” said Rene Pardo, the PBA board chair from Derby Ace.
Gallent has been with the team since the 2008-09 season or since completing a record six straight championships for Harbour Centre in the PBL.
The new Derby Ace coach has come on board as the team is about to start contract-extension negotiations with key players who helped the team win the 2009-2010 Philippine Cup championship.
Players with expiring contracts are James Yap, Roger Yap, Rafi Reavis, Don Allado, Romel Adducul, Jonathan Fernandez and Chris Timberlake.
“I understand (team manager) Alvin Patrimonio has talked to Roger Yap and they’ve agreed to a two-year deal. I’m the one talking to James Yap. He’s asking for a five-year deal and my counter is three years. We’ve just started talking,” said Pardo.
“Alvin, of course, will also sit down with Jorge. He may have his plans and recommendations,” Pardo also said.
