Purefoods stays on, shelves name change

- Joey Villar, Nelson Beltran -

MANILA, Philippines - Due to a strong public clamor, San Miguel Corp. is now leaning towards keeping Purefoods or B-MEG Derby Ace in the Philippine Basketball Association.

“Most likely the name change to Petron is off. There were so many reactions. The fans love Purefoods,” an SMC insider told The STAR.

Another source said the supposed sale of Purefoods to a group headed by Butch Campos’ Del Monte Pacific Ltd. and Ricardo Po’s Century Pacific Group of Companies may not push through, too.

Apparently, SMC wants to retain controlling shares in the giant food conglomerate.

PBA commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios confirmed Purefoods is staying on.

“I got a word that they’re reverting back to B-MEG Derby Ace Llamados,” said Barrios.
