Hawks swoop down on Icons
MANILA, Philippines - Five-time champion University of Manila notched its fourth straight victory as it demolished Informatics International Colleges, 85-63, to wrest the solo lead in the 10th NAASCU men’s basketball tournament at the UM gym recently.
Last year’s top rookie Jeff Alvin Viernes scored a game-high 29 points while Rhandelle Colina and JR Tan added 21 and 13 points, respectively, for the Hawks.
Mark Montuano and Jan Baltazar led the Icons with 24 and 13 points, respectively.
In other games, Centro Escolar University edged STI Colleges, 77-76, and AMA Computer University outclassed University of Makati, 84-69.
Axel Garcia fired 15 points while Reynel Cabasal and Justine Antes combined for 21 points for the Scorpions, who hiked their record to 3-1.
Jerald Bautista and MacLean Sabellina finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Olympians.
The Titans drew another solid game from Cameroonian Azi Mbomiko to beat the Hardy Herons and register their second win in four outings.
Mbomiko scattered 13 points to lead the Titans, who also drew 12 points from Romnick Narag, 11 points from Benedic Tan and 10 points from Mark Mangalindan.
UMak slid to 0-4.
